The Work of Scientists
2nd ESO students have been studying what scientists do in a project entitled “The Work of Scientists”. Both in maths and Physics and Chemistry, as well as in English, they have learnt that they are people who study things and try to figure out patterns or rules to explain how they work. Scientists need to keep the observations and research they do organized, so they use a special method called the scientific method, a process of steps that helps scientists find answers to problems or questions.

Last week we had the pleasure to welcome Omar Díaz-Castillo at Santa Teresa School to show students what working in a laboratory is like. Mr Díaz-Castillo is a scientist in the technology of producing Cheese who has had the opportunity to live in USA, Spain and Germany. Besides, he has worked at manufacturing sites as far away as Australia. His achievements as scientist include the design, development and commercialization of improved formulations and manufacturing processes for cheese products. He is also coauthor of two patents in the field of dairy technology.

Students had the opportunity to ask him questions in English about his job and studies, such as the place where he studied, the degree he got, his favourite subjects at school (maths), when and where he started working in a lab, what age he was when he decided to be scientist, the languages he speaks in the lab, his team, special equipment, raw materials, budget, research areas, safety and other interesting issues about a scientist’s life

The activity ended with a cheese tasting which everybody enjoyed so much.
